Car Insurance: 10 Tips to Pay Less
Have you noticed how quickly your car insurance renewal date
comes along? One of the most expensive car-related mistakes that motorists do
in the UK is allowing their car insurance to automatically renew.
Instead, we should all be taking a little bit of time to sit
down and look for a better deal.
With so many comparison sites out there, the deals offered
to us are transparent, fair and most-likely a lot cheaper than your renewal
quote.
There are some ways in which you can reduce the cost by even
more. So, here are our 10 tips to pay less for your car insurance.
1. Reduce your mileage
It is simple maths really – The fewer miles you’re doing
means you’re a lower risk to insurers as there is less chance of something
going wrong or getting involved in an accident.
2. Pay annually
If you choose to pay for your car insurance monthly then you
are effectively taking out a loan, and just like any loan, you will be paying
interest. The takeaway message here is; pay for your insurance annually and you’ll
save money.
3. Improve security
With vehicle thefts affecting virtually every area across
the UK, it should come as little surprise that if your car benefits from
improved security then you will reap the rewards when you receive your quote for
your insurance.
4. Increase the voluntary excess
This is where you need to get tactical because even though
increasing your excess will reduce your insurance premium. If you do need to claim,
then you will be forking out more money that what you might have wanted to.
5. Pay for what you need
Just because it’s there, it doesn’t mean that you need it.
Think carefully about the items offered to you, especially things such as
breakdown cover. The chances are, if you’re driving a new vehicle, you could
have it cheaper from your dealer or going directly to the breakdown cover
provider.
6. Cover type
If your car is a bit older and not worth as much as some
others out there, then perhaps a third party, fire and theft policy would be
better suited than comprehensive cover. Be sure to get a quote for both because
sometimes the comprehensive cover could come out cheaper.
7. Where to park
If you have a driveway or garage, then you should park your
car there overnight. Parking off the road is safer and more secure and
insurance providers will prefer it. Do not lie on your application because it
will void your insurance.
8. Additional drivers
Adding an extra driver to your policy could spell good news
for you and your premium, but only if they’re experienced. Always be honest
about who the main driver is, or it could invalidate your cover.
9. The right vehicle for you
Cars that carry a smaller engine are most likely to fall into
a lower insurance group and as a result, will have a lower premium. The only
time that this could differ is if you are insuring a classic car because
insurers know how much love and attention that owners put into them.
10.
Avoid modifications
If you’re looking at upgrading the audio system, styling and
most importantly the performance, consider the hike in price of your insurance.
Adding something as little as alloy wheels could have a negative affect on the
price that you pay.
