Brynna Juniors FC: An Evening With Paul Merson

Thursday 5th September sees Brynna Juniors FC host an evening with former England, Portsmouth and Arsenal legend, Paul Merson.

Originally a forward, Merson found success as an attacking midfielder, and play maker later in his career. Most recently Paul has been seen on our televisions as a football pundit for Sky.

Born in Harlesden, he made his professional debut for Arsenal during the 1986-87 season. He would then go on to play for the North London club for a total of eleven seasons. While he was with the Gunners, Merson was a key player in the club's success under Scottish manager George Graham, winning the Football League Championship twice, the FA Cup, the Football League Cup, and the European Cup Winners' Cup.

In 1997, he joined Middlesbrough, helping the club gain promotion to the Premier League and finish as runner-up in the 1997-98 Football League Cup. After joining Aston Villa in 1998, Merson went on to become club captain and played for the team in the 2000 FA Cup Final, the last ever to be held at the original Wembley Stadium.

In 2002, in a shock move he signed for second-tier side Portsmouth and captained the club to the First Division Championship title and promotion to the Premier League. A year later, he returned to the West Midlands with Walsall, where he went on to serve as player-manager until he was sacked in February 2006.

He had short spells with non-league clubs Tamworth, Whitton Athletic and Welshpool Town, making his final appearance in 2012 at the age of 43.

As well as a long and healthy career for his clubs, Merson was also capped a total of 21 times for the England National Football Team and represented the country at the 1992 UEFA European Championships as well as the 1998 FIFA World Cup.

Paul will be attending Llanharran RFC (Pontyclun, CF72 9RD) this Thursday with what is expected to be an evening of stories, laughs and a delicious hog roast.

Tickets cost £20 and are still available by contacting Mark Morris on 07917 807 764.

As part of the #PremierInTheCommunity campaign, Premier Commercial Vehicles have proudly contributed to the cause and will be in attendance on the night.
