Not Wearing Sunglasses Behind the Wheel Could Land You With a £5,000 Fine and 9 Penalty Points

It has been announced that drivers who get behind the wheel without the appropriate eye wear could be slapped with a fine of up to £5,000.

While it isn’t illegal not to wear sunglasses when driving in bright conditions, you could be slapped with a careless driving charge if you are driving without glasses during certain times of the day when glare becomes more of an issue.

Police can now stop you claiming that you are “driving without due care and attention” if they catch you driving without tinted lenses while the sun is shining in your eyes and you momentarily take your eyes off the road.

If you are like us and enjoy reading the Highway Code before bed, you may remember Rule 237 that states that you must slow down and, in some cases, pull over if you are dazzled by bright sunlight.

Earlier this year you may recall a slight road collision involving Prince Philip who was dazzled by sunlight while driving his Land Rover.

If you are driving without care and manage to get spotted by a police officer, you may find yourself picking up a fine of £100 and up to three penalty points on your licence.

You could also face an additional fine of up to £5,000 if you contest the charge in court and are found guilty of the offences. This will also boost the amount of penalty points from 3 to a staggering 9.

Now you may think this is all simple enough, however drivers could also face a penalty for wearing sunglasses that are too dark.

As for the boring stuff; sunglasses come in four different categories depending on how much light they allow to filter through. The average pair of sunglasses that you can pickup on the high street often transmit anywhere from 18 to 43 percent of light and are recommended for daytime driving.
