New Land Rover Defender Won't Be Built In The UK



It has been confirmed during the past few days that the new version of the Land Rover Defender will be built in Slovakia rather than the UK.

2016 saw the last of the current shape Defender completed in the Land Rover factory in Solihull in the West Midlands. It was its home for nearly 70 years during the continuous production.


On Tuesday of last week, JLR (Jaguar Land Rover) announced that their new plant in Nitra, Slovakia would be given the orders to assemble this iconic 4x4. The plant was opened only last October, and some believe it was always the plan to move the production overseas.

We may have to wait until the Frankfurt Motor Show later on this year for the official reveal and the only images that we have are of the camouflage-patterned prototype that are on this page.

The news of production moving abroad comes amid gloom over the prospects for British car manufacturing and follows on from the decision to also move the Discovery abroad last year.


Many are in fear of the “dark days of the mid-1980’s” returning if a no-deal Brexit is confirmed after we witnessed a 14% drop year-on-year in the UK car market during March 2019. It comes at a time where many other manufacturers are choosing to pack up shop and move to different locations across Europe.

In a statement, the company has explained that the decision to move the Defender to Slovakia was due to the plans for “significant investment” in the Solihull plant which leaves many of us questioning whether we will ever see this iconic model built in Britain again.
