8 Daily Habits That Will Ruin Your Van

I’m sure that many of us can relate to what we are about to disclose but we thought it was only just that we do what we can do help save your van. Without realising it, many of your everyday habits are ruining your vans and causing unnecessary strain on your workhorse. Thanks to work done by the RAC, we have here for you the top 8 habits that reduces the lifespan of our van.

1.     Flooring the accelerator in a high gear
As many of us are now driving relatively new vans you may notice a little indicator light that appears on the dashboard as you are moving through the gears. This magical feature is there for a reason and will avoid the engine working harder than it needs to. Make sure you pay close attention to this light during your future journeys.

2.     Overloading your van
Some vans have a helpful indicator that notifies you if you have overloaded the cargo area, the Citroen Berlingo is a fine example of this. There is a reason behind this, not only is it illegal to exceed the payload, but it also places additional strain on the brakes and suspension of your van.

3.     Resting your hand on the gearstick
Now this one came as a bit of a shock to us however it is proven that resting your hand on the gearstick results in premature wear of the gearbox. The reason for this is that the gearstick is hooked to a selector fork which is designed to make connection with a rotating collar for a short time. Ensure that you keep both hands on the wheel, just like you were taught.

4.      Dragging your brakes downhill
This is a simple fix, just move down a gear or two whilst applying some gentle braking but continue to remove your foot from the peal to allow for the brakes to cool down. Dragging your brakes will increase the amount of times you will need to replace them because of the increase of wear.

5.     Revving your engine when cold
We have all heard that making short trips on a regular basis can negatively affect your van. Ensure that your van is sufficiently warmed up before setting off on any journey and keep the revs to a minimum.

6.     Ignoring warning lights
New vans seem to light up like a Christmas tree with what seems like hundreds of lights embedded into the dashboard. The RAC have said that the amount of people ignoring these lights and causing more damage to their van is staggering and something that should be acted upon immediately.

7.     Hitting speed bumps and potholes
Nearly a third of all reported damage to vehicles is from potholes, so why do we continue to drive through them? Yes, we can blame the local government however we all have a part to play in keeping our van safe. Stay a bit further back from the vehicle in front to give you a fraction more time to deal with the oncoming hazards.

8.     Switching to reverse before your van stops
It’s not rocket science however it something that we are again, all guilty of. When driving with an automatic gearbox it is imperative that the vehicle stops before you switch is to reverse from moving forward and vice versa. Not doing this may add a second or two on to your journey however it will halt any further wear and tear to your vehicle.
