Main Dealers or Brokers?

VW Amarok Leasing Deals
For years now we have all wondered whether we benefit from purchasing a new van from a main dealer or a broker. Those who don't know, a main dealer is often franchised from the manufacturer and is governed by the powers-that-be giving the management team very little control over the stock, prices and day-to-day running of the business. A broker on the other hand controls exactly what vehicles they sell and at what price.

I feel as though I am lucky because I have worked for both a main dealer and a broker. They are two very different outfits that are both chasing targets. You might expect two businesses that both employ people to sell vehicles to be very similar, nothing could be further from the truth.

Best Van Stock

Let's first take a look at a main dealer. Yes, they have inside knowledge of the latest product announcements and future marketing campaigns however very rarely is this fed back to the customer.

For example, a new van is in the pipeline, the units have been built and the vehicles will be arriving at dealers in the coming days. A customer walks in, he is looking for that exact new model however the sales specialist goes straight for the older model and tries their best to sell them that. Why? Because they have been instructed to sell the older model before the new one. Who does that benefit? The main dealer certainly benefits from this, however, where does that leave the customer? The customer now has a model which will be out of date by the time he takes delivery. This damages the future resale value and could land him in quite a bit of trouble.

How do brokers deal with such an issue? Well, in short, they don't. Thankfully they don't carry any physical stock which means that they will listen to the requirements of their customers and find them their perfect new van, not the van that they have been instructed to sell. It's one of the reasons that in recent years brokers have become so successful.

While historically a main dealer will be the king pin and the go-to avenue for a great deal, those times seem to have slipped away. Mainly because brokers now make up for the majority of commercial vehicle sales within the UK. We aren't talking a couple of hundred anymore, we are talking thousands.

A broker is given discounts across various commercial vehicles based on the volume that they are able to commit to, that is often a lot more than a main dealer. Why? A main dealer is stuck in the same position with a limited amount of space. There are overheads, stocking costs and other financial implications that impact on the discounts that are offered to customers making them noncompetitive against quotes from brokers.

Contact Me

We have all been there, we spend time with a sales executive, we get all excited and then you never hear from them again. All you want to say is "contact me!". We shouldn't have to do that. The sales executive should want our business and should be doing everything they can to get it. It seems there has been an increase in the search for 'low hanging fruit' and has made them blind to selling opportunities. This can be down to the laziness of the individual but more often than not because of the amount of walk ins that they deal with everyday, they chase after the easy sell.

Meanwhile, in a brokerage, they find that the phones will ring only a handful of times during the day and very rarely will an enquiry come through the website. What does that mean? It means that your information is treated like gold. You are spoken to within minutes, there are questions asked and the price they present to you is far more affordable that what you were offered by your main dealer. What do you do? Of course you buy it! They will even arrange delivery to your door wherever you are in the UK, now isn't that a nice touch?
